First English edition, deluxe subscriber's issue. Two volumes. Folio (390 x 320mm). Each volume housed in its original engraved wooden box. Finely bound for subscribers in full burgundy calf, lettered and decorated in gilt. Silk moire endpapers decorated gilt. Extensively illustrated across the two volumes. In all; 15 copper-plates; 23 full-page colour lithographs; 349 lithographs in the text; and 159 facsimile wood engravings in the text. A fine set, very well-preserved, with the original publisher's boxes.
An exceptional deluxe copy of one of the finest examples of fin de siecle illustrations of the New Testament.
The original illustrations were exhibited at the Lemercier Gallery at 35 New Bond Street throughout 1896 and 1897. These deluxe issues would appear to have been sold by Lemercier to subscribers, bearing their name to both the wooden boxes and the spines of the bindings.
PROVENANCE: Bought on subscription by Mrs Elsie Pringle (list of subscribers to rear), then presented to "Emily Newmarch Ladles, a gift for having gained her Batchelor of Science Degree, December 2nd 1905" (gift inscription to first blank).
