Original Plan for a Bookbinding
Douglas Cockerell And Son, 1932.
An original design for the gold-tooling on a bookbinding by Douglas Cockerell. The design is hand drawn in ink on a sheet of paper, housed in a card portfolio covered with paper marbled by Cockerell which features his distinctive concentric circles. Opposite the design is Cockerell's label, inscribed:"Sketch design for goldtooling on the binding of a testimonial to Hon. John Collier. To be carried out on brown levant morocco. Estimated cost of binding £5.5.0. Should the binder be required to provide vellum endsheets, this will be extra".Below the inscribed label is a sample of the brown levant morocco to be used. The portfolio is still wrapped in the original marbled papers used for sending, with address label, stamps and postmark all still present. In near fine condition, with a little offsetting from the morocco sample to the design.
A most uncommon survival of a complete and original prospective design for a fine binding by Douglas Cockerell, still in its attractive and original packaging material.
PROVENANCE: Design commissioned by James Arden Grant (artist and printmaker, 1887-1973), of 27 Clareville Grove, London (address label to wrapping paper).
