Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass
University of California Press, 1982.
Deluxe edition illustrated and signed by Moser. Folio. Full red morroco with gilt titles, in matching slipcase. Illustrated with 75 wood engravings by Moser. A fine copy.
Moser's interpretation of Carroll's tale and characters is without doubt one of the most innovative. Moser set out to show Wonderland through Alice's eyes, and thus Alice herself (modeled on his youngest daughter Maddy) appears only four times. Some find the illustrations terrifying, aggressive, and even sinister. Moser wrote in the afterword:
"I have tried to keep the illustrations weird (yet reasonable), and grotesque (yet humorous), but I have not tried to make them pretty or graceful." (Moser)
