John Piper's Stowe [With Two Signed Prints] With An Introduction By John Piper and Commentary By Mark Girouard
Hurtwood Press in association with The Tate Gallery 1983.
First edition. Number 48 of 50 copies signed by John Piper and issued with two original large signed prints. Elephant folio (490 x 390mm). Bound in marbled-patterned cloth by Smith Settle and lettered gilt to the spine. Original prospectus loosely laid in. The first signed print depicts the Palladian Bridge, and the second depicts The Oxford Bridge and the Boycott Pavilion. Each measures 450 x 620mm. Reproductions of fifty paintings and drawings of Stowe by Piper. A fine copy, very-well preserved by the glassine dustwrapper and original postage box, both still present, though the glassine is a little worn.
It is most uncommon to find examples with the two original signed prints still present. Piper first visited Stowe in the 1930s when he summed up the faded glory of the gardens with the evocative phrase 'pleasing decay.'
