Compassion An Ode. In Celebration of the Centenary of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
Privately printed by Henry Ling for Mrs Thomas Hardy, 1924.
First separate edition. One of twenty-five copies printed for Mrs Thomas Hardy, signed by the author and initialled by his wife "F.E.H." Original cream paper wrappers. Housed in a custom chemise and half-morocco slipcase. A near fine copy.
This poem was written at the request of the RSPCA and first printed in the society's centenary volume, before appearing in The Times on 16 June 1924. 'It was expressly stated in The Times that there was no copyright, and immediate moves were made to reprint the poem privately' (Purdy). Although the present edition appeared first, it did not prevent other separate printings of the poem, including that by A.J.A Symons.
