And Other Stories
The Basement Room And Other Stories
Cresset Press, 1935.
First edition, first issue in green cloth. Original publisher's original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, in silver and green dustwrapper. A near fine copy, lettering slightly dulled, in a very good dustwrapper indeed, which is bright and crisp with just a small chip to the corner at the top of the spine
Greene's first collection of short stories, with The Basement Room, I Spy, A Chance For Mr Lever and Proof Positive seeing their first publication in any form. The Basement Room is recognised as Greene's most successful short story, and was adapted, by Greene in 1948, into the Oscar nominated film, The Fallen Idol directed by Carol Reed.
The dustwrapper is made of a paper-backed foil over which is printed the design and lettering. The effect is quite striking, but the thinness of the paper means that the dustwrapper is particularly fragile and thus rarely encountered. When it is, it is usually badly chipped or with the lettering worn away.
