First edition, 32pp of terminal adverts (second state). Original grey cloth with black titles. A superb author's presentation copy inscribed with a self-portrait, "with a signed portrait of the author, H. G. Wells, June 3/99". Before signing his name, Wells has doodled a short figure; bearded and bespectacled. A very good copy, with slight wear to spine ends, a couple of faint marks to cloth, spine darkened, and occasional foxing to contents. Ownership inscription of Alice R. C. Rogers at the head of the title page.
Presentation copies of Wells's most acclaimed science fiction novel are rare.
