On the 'Polar Star' in the Arctic Sea With The Statements of commander u. cagni upon the sledge expedition to 86 34' north, and of dr a. cavalli molinelli upon his return to the bay of teplitz
Hutchinson and Co., 1903.
First edition. 4to. Two volumes. Publisher's original blue-green cloth, lettered gilt to the spines with the Polar Star blocked in gilt to each upper cover. Photogravure frontispieces to each volume, with fourteen further photogravure plates, two large fold-out photographic panoramas, five colour maps and 212 illustrations in the text. A fine set, bright externally and fresh internally, with just two very short closed tear to the head of each spine. Nevertheless a much more handsome set than usually encountered.
A beautiful copy of the Duke of Abruzzi's account of his 1899-1900 assault on the North Pole.
Considering that it was self-sponsored by an explorer-aristocrat and that the ship was stuck in ice for eleven months, it was an unlikely expedition to set a new farthest north record, twenty-one nautical miles nearer the North Pole than Nansen had managed in 1895.
PROVENANCE: From the library of distinguished polar historian Ann Savours Shirley, with her pencil inscription to the front endpaper.
