Translated from Old French by Sebastian Evans
one of Jessie's most important achievements
The High History of the Holy Graal Translated from Old French by Sebastian Evans
Dent, 1903.
Deluxe edition, number 48 of 225 large paper copies. Small 4to. Full white vellum with bevelled edges, lettering and decoration in blue and gilt. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Illustrated title page and 22 other illustrations all printed on India paper. The illustrations are very detailed line drawings, some in a red decorative border. There are also 36 ornamental head pieces. A very good copy indeed of a beautiful and rare book. As usual the title page and frontispiece are affected by some foxing, the rest of the book is bright and clean.
This sumptuously produced book is described by Colin White as "one of Jessie's most important achievements". The elaborate borders are reminiscent of Burne-Jones and William Morris' productions for the Kelmscott press. The paper is of high quality which feels lovely in the hand and the illustrations are fantastical and striking. White describes them as giving the reader "a glimpse of a land and time remote from reality".
