IN ORIGINAL PRINTED DUSTWRAPPER
The Princess Nobody A Tale Of Fairy Land after the drawings by Richard Doyle; printed in colours by Edmund Evans.
Longmans, Green and Co, 1884.
First edition. 4to. Publisher's cloth backed boards illustrated with chromolithographic illustrations, in the exceptionally rare pictorial dustwrapper. Pictorial endpapers, with chromolithographic frontispiece and title page vignette, with twenty-three further chromolithographic illustrations, two being double-page spreads, and thirty in sepia, including one double-page spread. A fine copy in a very good dustwrapper indeed, which despite a couple of minor chips and tears to the edges remains extremely clean and attractive.
A fairy tale centring around the rash promise made by the king of the fairies when a dwarf offers to provide him and his queen with a much-desired child. The princess is hidden away as a young teenager in order to protect her, and a series of suitors encounter several obstacles in their quest to win her hand in marriage. The princess disappears again after the marriage, but the story ends happily. Lang wrote this story to fit Doyle's pictures at the suggestion of publisher-friend, Charles Longman.
We are aware of no other extant copy of this title in a dustwrapper.
