The Golliwogg's Circus
Longmans, 1903.
First edition. Oblong 4to. Cloth spine with paper covered boards. Upper cover illustrated in colour. This tale is wonderfully illustrated in colour by Florence Upton, including an excellent double page illustration of the circus animals on parade, with Golly astride the elephant. A very good copy indeed, slightly dusty to the upper cover.
Florence Upton modelled her story on her collection of five little "penny wooden" or "deutsch dolls" and her "minstrel-style" rag doll, which she named "Golliwogg", her mother, Bertha, providing the verse text based on Florence's drawings.
