Part First, Shipwrecked in the Air
The Mysterious Island: Part First, Shipwrecked in the Air
H.L. Shepard & Co., 1874.
First American edition. Original green cloth with decorations to spine and upper cover in black and gilt. Forty-two full page engraved plates. A very good copy that shows a little general wear, particularly to the spine ends, but is a generally bright and tight copy.
The whole of Verne's famous trilogy, The Mysterious Island, was translated from the French by W.H.G. Kingston and serialised from March 1874 in the St James Magazine, with the intention of the publishers Samson Low, issuing the three volumes in book form in 1875. Failure to secure copyright in America by either author or translator, meant that Shepard were able to produce this unauthorised edition in October 1874, forcing the authorised American publisher, Scribner Armstrong, to follow suit (they copyrighted the book on the same day). Thus both issues precede the British edition, and though neither is as scarce or desirable, the Shepard edition is noticeably the scarcer of the American editions.
