Summer Exhibition : The Children's Library

Our summer exhibition runs Monday 15th July until Tuesday 27th August and is a paradise for lovers of children's literature and illustration.

Exhibits range from a 1908 first edition of The Wind in the Willows inscribed by author Kenneth Grahame to a friend, as well as artist E.H. Shepard's own copy of his illustrated version of the story, to a first edition of Elmer the patchwork Elephant.

Animal stories are further represented with one of the very rare first editions of Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter Rabbit, a book which had to be privately printed by the author when she failed to find a publisher.

All the classics you might expect to find on the nursery shelf are represented spanning almost 2 centuries, from Alice in Wonderland to The Gruffalo.

Original artwork on show includes all the original drawings for Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, watercolours for Enid Blyton's Noddy books, Graham Oakley's Church Mice, Postman Pat cartoon strips and Andy Pandy.

Entry is free of charge.
