Two Hand Painted Plates
1940.
Two painted and glazed ceramic plates, each 15.2cm in diameter. Each hand painted by Jessie King in vibrant yellow, green, blue, red and black. The inside of one plate features a floral rim with a yellow stripe beneath, and four red and blue floral designs on a yellow border, and a central cluster of flowers around a black base and blue stripe. This plate's underside shows black stripe, a large yellow band and four additional floral designs bordering it. The other plate's inside shows three berry and flower clusters on a black line border as well as three small blue flowers, a yellow stripe beneath, and a central collection of berries and flowers on a black background surrounded by blue petals and three leaf designs. This plate's underside has a yellow stripe, a large collection of palm leaves and clusters of red, blue and yellow flowers.Each plate signed by the artist with her initials, a black rabbit in line and green gate to the base. Both plates illustrated in vibrant yellow, green, blue, red and black. Jessie King's nickname "Rabbit" and her house in Kirkudbright "Greengate" are referred to on the base, as was her custom when signing her pottery pieces.
These pieces with their black borders and rich colours are an interesting departure from Jessie M King's usual delicate pastel style.
