Gold was the first rower to receive a Knighthood for services to sport. Educated at Eton he stroked the Eton eight to victory in the Ladies Challenge Cup at Henley three years in a row. He rowed the Oxford Boat in four Unversity Boat Races, became Captain of Leander from 1898 - 1900, was a key member of Henley Stewards and coached crews from Oxford and Leander, including the 1908 Olympic Gold medalists. Vanity Fair notes, "He has wonderful knees; and his legs are always loudly appreciated by the crowd at Putney."
