Original ink and watercolour, heightened in silver on vellum. 28cm x 21cm. Signed in full to the lower right hand corner. In very good condition.
This painting, in pastel shades of violet and sage green, is strikingly heightened with silver paint to the trunks of the silver birch trees and was used to illustrate the Oscar Wilde fairy story, The Birthday of the Infanta. Below the image in the artist's trademark stylised lettering is the legend, "His Dream: He would bring her acorn cups and dew drenched anemones and tiny glow worms to be stars in the pale gold of her hair".
PROVENANCE: Merle Taylor (the artist's daughter), exhibited at the International Symbolist Exhibition arranged by Victor Arwas, Tokyo, 1970; sold Sotheby's 1977, Lot 159; A.D.Portno Collection 2013 - 2022.
