First edition. 8vo. Blue cloth, lettered in gilt, with a design in ochre and green. Top edge gilt. Seventy five full page colour illustrations, under captioned tissue guards, by R Talbot Kelly. A near fine copy, the cloth clean and bright, with very occasional interior foxing. Bookplate to front pastedown.
The author stated his aim for this book was to give a broadly pictorial representation of life and the scenery of Egypt. History, culture, the Nile, Cairo and the Desert are all described from first hand observation. The book was met with very positive reviews, "We have seldom read a better description of native life, or one evidently written from close observation" (Standard) "Seventy five exquisite paintings which make this book a perfect treasure of beauty." (Saturday review). One of 3000 copies, originally published at a price of 20/-.
