When We Were Very Young, Winnie the Pooh, Now We Are Six & The House at Pooh Corner
FIRST DELUXE EDITIONS IN ORIGINAL BOXES
The 'Pooh' Books When We Were Very Young, Winnie the Pooh, Now We Are Six & The House at Pooh Corner
Methuen, 1925.
Four volumes, all first deluxe editions. Each in their original publisher's boxes and each, except for Now We Are Six, with the original glassine wrapper. Bound in full soft leather with elaborate gilt decoration to spines and gilt vignettes to covers. These deluxe editions are all edges gilt, have pictorial endpapers and line drawings by E.H. Shepard. The bindings were published in three colours, in this set, When We Were Very Young and the Now We Are Six are in blue, and The House At Pooh Corner and Winnie the Pooh are in red. A superb set, all fine copies with the glassines in very good to fine condition, with that of The House At Pooh Corner lacking a portion of its front flap, now laid in.
In 1925 Methuen decided to introduce a small number of these deluxe bindings for Milne's children's books. At this time When We Were Very Young was in its tenth printing and Winnie the Pooh about to be published. The bindings are in lovely soft leather, which has a tendency to become very rubbed. It is uncommon to find attractive copies in their original state.
