John Murray, 1977.
First edition. Original yellow cloth lettered in gilt, with a gilt vignette of Archie to the upper board, in the pictorial dustwrapper with a later publisher's price sticker to the front flap. Illustrated in colour throughout by Phillida Gili, whose illustrations were based on Betjeman's manuscript sketches. A near fine copy, in a very good dustwrapper, price-clipped with some tape-repaired closed tears to the verso.
Betjeman's life attachment to his teddy bear Archibald Ormsby Gore was famous, with Archie inspiring Sebastian Flyte's Aloysius in Brideshead Revisited, and this charming story is based on a tale about him Betjeman used to tell his children.
