A transcription of an early draft of Swallows and Amazons held at Abbot Hall
Amazon Publications, 1997.
First edition. One of 500 copies printed for subscribers. Original pictorial paper wrappers. Illustrations by Steven Spurrier. A fine copy.
A transcription of the original draft of Swallows and Amazons held in the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and Museum, Kendal, published under its original title. Differences between the draft and published versions are indicated by a change in font or the insertion of asterisks. Where possible, Ransome's corrections to the typescript have been reproduced, and where he wrote alternative versions they are reproduced side by side.
This volume also includes the originally commissioned illustrations by Steven Spurrier for the book. They were rejected by Ransome at the time and consequently the first edition was unillustrated, except for Spurrier's dustwrapper, making this the first time the illustrations have appeared alongside the text they were commissioned to illustrate.
PROVENANCE: From the collection of John Cowen, Ransome collector and scholar.
