The End of Nero and Beginning of Galba Foure Bookes of the Histories of Cornelius Tacitus. The Life of Agricola
Printed by J.L. for Richard Whitaker, 1640.
Sixth edition. 4to. Modern quarter morocco over marbled boards, lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine. All edges red. Decorative initials and chapter headings. A generally clean and attractive copy, occasional foxing and slight browning to the page edges.
First translated into English by Henry Savile in 1591, the "Histories" was at that time widely considered to be the most important English language version of any Roman historian, and in the next 49 years his translation went through a further 5 editions. Savile was a remarkable man and scholar - Warden of Merton, Provost of Eton and tutor in Greek and secretary in Latin to Queen Elizabeth, to whom the translation is dedicated. Richard Whitaker was a bookseller at the sign of the King's Arms in St Paul's Churchyard. John Legate the younger, was included in the list of authorised London printers in the Star-chamber decrees in 1637, and again in 1648.
