By William Shakespeare
the daintiest, most delicately finished work
A Midsummer Night's Dream By William Shakespeare
Constable, 1914.
First edition, first issue with illustrations by Heath Robinson. Large 4to. Beautifully decorated green cloth with decoration in gilt, pinks and blues. Twelve colour plates and sixty-three line drawings. A very good copy, light wear to the spine, internally bright and fresh.
Published as a Christmas Gift book in 1914, reviews were very favourable, "...some of the daintiest, most delicately finished work that has ever come from [Robinson's] brush. His fairies have the grace and airy lightness that belong to to those little people; and he has depicted varying phases of the story with the delightful humour and happy spirit of romance in which Shakespeare conceived them."
This beautiful book comes in this rather sumptuous binding and in a cheaper plain cloth and boards.
PROVENANCE: Inscribed "Elsie with love from Aunt Ida [Outhwaite]" on the front endpaper.
