A Word-Puzzle
Macmillan, 1879.
First edition. Original publisher's red cloth lettered in gilt. A very good copy with some dustiness and a couple of marks to the upper cover. Early ownership inscription to the front endpaper and slight looseness between sections internally, but sound.
The Game of Doublets was invented by Dodgson at Christmas 1877, for two young ladies who had 'nothing to do' (Williams - Madan - Green)
The game consists of connecting two words of equal letters by links in which a single letter is changed. The chain with the fewest links wins. This booklet contains the rules, and a lengthy glossary of admissible words.
