The Secret Agent
Methuen, 1907.
First edition, first issue with inserted ads dated September 1907. Original red cloth, with gilt titles and decoration to spine. A near fine copy, with bright cloth and just a little wear and an inconspicuous splash to the base of the spine. Bookplate to pastedown and some foxing to the prelims, but generally very clean.
The Secret Agent depicts the atmosphere of Edwardian London in a psychological thriller of the anarchist underworld. Conrad's wit and chivalrous magnanimity are at their airiest in this novel. (Connolly)
A Haycraft Queen cornerstone and said to be one of the favourite novels of both Graham Greene and Eric Ambler. The Secret Agent was filmed in 1996 with a screenplay by Christopher Hampton and starring Bob Hoskins and Patricia Arquette.
