The tragedy of life, Howard, is not that the beautiful die young, but that they grow old and mean
The Long Good-Bye
Hamish Hamilton, 1953.
First edition. Original maroon cloth with silver titles on the spine in stylish Fitz Wegner dustwrapper. A fine copy in a near fine, price clipped, dustwrapper, which just shows a trace of wear to the spine ends, but is uncommonly crisp and bright.
The book on which the iconic movie is based. Featuring the laconic private eye Philip Marlowe. "Romantic, tending towards a sentimentality it never quite reaches, The Long Goodbye is beautifully composed, with taut economical style exactly suited to narrator Marlowe. If this is not literature, what is?" [Burgess]. Chandler thought of it as his "best novel" [The Raymond Chandler Papers, 2000], and appropriately it won the 1955 Edgar Award for Best Novel.
