I will sing the song of companionship
Leaves of Grass
J.M. Dent, 1913.
First edition thus. 4to. Publisher's green cloth with black lettering and decoration. Twenty-four colour plates by Margaret Cook tipped onto grey art paper. A very good copy, joints a little loose, with minor creases to three of the plates.
Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, has become a classic and one of the most beloved books in America, but faced challenges and fierce criticism almost immediately upon publication, due its sexual references and homoeroticism. The book was labelled "obscene," "too sensual" and "shocking" and was banned form many libraries and bookshops.
In this beautiful edition Margaret Cook's illustrations depict love, nudity and eroticism in sensual, romantic style.
