The English Lakes Described by WT Palmer
A & C Black, 1905.
First edition. 8vo. Pictorial blue cloth with gilt lettering. Top edge gilt. Seventy five colour plates under captioned tissue guards, all from watercolours by Heaton Cooper. A very good copy, spine darkened, foxing to endpapers and some lighter spotting throughout.
Alfred Heaton Cooper's paintings wonderfully evoke the colours and scenes of the Lake District. Heaton Cooper was a struggling artist when he was approached by A & C Black. The commission for this book gave him enough money to open a studio in Grasmere, which is still there today. The Grasmere Gallery, specialises in the work of Alfred Heaton Cooper and his son William Heaton Cooper. The paintings for this book certainly achieve the publisher's aim of providing "a visual description of a particular place."
