Watership Down
Collings, 1972.
First edition. Original brown cloth with gilt titles and rabbit vignette to upper cover, in brown pictorial dustwrapper. Colour folding map at rear. A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper, which just shows a touch of wear to one corner at the base of the spine, but is uncommonly clean and bright.
The author's first book, printed in an edition of only 2000 copies by an obscure publisher due to the fact that, as with Wind in the Willows some 64 years earlier, prospective publishers considered a long and complex anthropomorphic tale would appeal neither to children nor adults. Like Kenneth Grahame's tale, it has since become a much loved book in both genres and is one of the classics of children's literature.
The book was winner of the Carnegie Medal for children's literature in 1972.
