An Edwardian travel guide and cultural commentary by a highly regarded writer on India. Mortimer Menpes had produced a series of beautiful watercolours during his travels in India and Steel, already a noted authority on India was approached to provide text to accompany the drawings. The fee demanded by Steel was higher than Black's budget allowed so in order for the project to proceed Menpes agreed to contribute to the cost. Three thousand copies of the book were published and offered for sale at a price of 20/-. Contents include: Gates of Pearl, Rajputs, Mughuls, Hinduism, Buddhism, Art & Crafts and Women in India.
