John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1879
John Wisden & Co., 1879.
Original publisher's yellow paper wrappers printed in brown. A near fine copy, with wrappers crisp and clean. The spine shows a little paper loss at the base of the spine and trifling superficial wear, but is intact and tight. An exceptional copy.
The sixteenth issue of Wisden and the first in which, despite the continuation of the name, sees the end of any pretence of being an almanack listing past and present events and concerns itself solely with the reporting of the 1878 cricket season. Matches involving MCC and the counties take up the lion's share with a section devoted to the inaugural Australian first class tour of England, most notable for the exploits of 'The Demon' Spofforth, Australia's fast bowler who took 10-20 (including a hat-trick) in the match against MCC at Lord's.
Wisdens from this period are notably rare in their original wrappers and copies without significant damage or repair are all but unobtainable.
