The Thames Painted by Mortimer Menpes and Text by G.E. Mitton
A & C Black, 1906.
First edition. 8vo. Slate blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration in white, blue and green, depicting Thames scenes and elegant white swans. Top edge gilt. Fifty-five full page colour illustrations by Menpes, twenty colour chapter headings, plus a fold out map. A near fine copy, bright and fresh, with a little spotting to the page edges and endpapers.
The Thames is unusual in that it contains colour chapter headings, printed on coated paper (the new three colour process only worked on art paper). It was a landmark in publishing history, but the experiment was not repeated.
Inman 80.
