Alice's Adventures Under Ground
Macmillan, 1886.
First edition. 8vo. Red cloth with gilt lettering and vignettes to lower cover. All edges gilt. This book reproduces in facsimile the original manuscript for Carroll's story with 37 of the author's own drawings. A near fine copy, very bright indeed with a little spotting to the endpapers.
The story of Alice was first told on a summer's day on the River Isis near Oxford. One of the little girls in the party, Alice Liddell, (the real Alice) asked the author to write the tale down for her. He did this and added some drawings of Alice to accompany his manuscript. When the story was published in 1866 it was accompanied by the now famous illustrations by John Tenniel. This book gives us an insight into how the story began and how Alice looked in the author's imagination - a peek into the genesis of one of the most important children's stories of all time.
