& Their Mottoes
A Book of Sundials & Their Mottoes
T.N. Foulis, 1914.
First edition. Small 8vo. Paper covered boards with Jessie M. King illustrations in vibrant colours. Titles in gilt to upper cover and spine, top edge gilt. In the original grey dustjacket, with colour plate to upper panel. Eight tipped in colour plates by Alfred Rawlings and thirty six drawings by Warrington Hogg. A very good copy indeed, bright and crisp, with just a faint moisture mark to the top of the spine of both book and dustwrapper.
Some of the Sundials featured are listed as being owned by Sir Frank Crisp of Friar Park, Henley on Thames, later the home of George Harrison.
Jessie M. King, the cover designer, was a student at the Glasgow School of Art. She studied under Charles Rennie Mackintosh and after winning an award at the Turin Exhibition for her book binding design, went on to become a collectable book illustrator and jewellery designer.
PROVENANCE: Bookplate of George Fleming, noted British collector of children's books, to front pastedown.
