RENÉ KIEFFER PRESENTATION BINDING
l'habitation Forcée by Rudyard Kipling
Rene Kieffer, Paris, 1921.
Limited edition, no. 280 of 500 copies printed on hand made paper. In a special Rene Kieffer binding of moss green morocco with elaborate design by Jessie M. King embossed in blind, spine titles in gilt. Kieffer label to initial blank. Patterned endpapers. Top edge gilt. Colour wrapper, pochoir vignette to the title page and a combination of full page and smaller vignettes in pochoir accompany the text. A fine copy.
This special binding variant is not listed in Colin White's check list. A copy in a similar binding came the estate of Merle Taylor, Jessie's daughter and was presumably one of a handful of presentation copies.
The delicate drawings for this book were prepared during Jessie's sojourn in Paris. They are reproduced using the stencilling technique known as pochoir, which gives the colours a great clarity. The book was printed by Rene Kieffer who was well known in Paris for his innovative book designs and techniques. An excellent example.
