INSCRIBED FOR VIVIEN LEIGH
Pomp and Circumstance
Heinemann, 1960.
First edition. Original blue boards, in the pictorial dustwrapper. Presentation copy to Vivien Leigh, inscribed by Coward on the front free endpaper: "Dear Darling, many many happy returns, love Noëlie". A near fine copy in a bright, near fine dustwrapper, with a little wear to the edges.
An excellent association: Coward was a long-time friend of both Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier. He had launched Olivier's career by giving him the part of Victor Prynne in Private Lives in 1930, and later worked with Leigh in South Sea Bubble (1956) and Look After Lulu (1959). The novel Pomp and Circumstance has the same colonial island setting as his play South Sea Bubble.
PROVENANCE: From the library of Vivien Leigh (1913-67)
