An Old Tale New-told
Beauty and the Beast An Old Tale New-told
Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1875.
First edition, first issue. 4to. Black buckram over bevelled boards. Lettering and decorative rose vignettes embossed in gilt, white and red. All edges gilt. Ten glorious chromolithographic plates, plus many steel engravings in the text. A very good copy indeed. Lovely and bright, with just occasional light spotting to contents and minor rubs to the corners.
Greatly influenced by the Art of the Pre-Raphaelites and her love of ancient myths and legends, EVB's work is rich in colour and renaissance decor. Beauty and the Beast is widely considered to be her piece de resistance. Her depiction of the Beast, unlike other portrayals, is a walrus type creature, perhaps inspired by the shape changing Selkie of mythology.
"E.V.B.'s pictures are always charming. Their delicacy, richness, and glow make her illustrations delightful, and none she has given us have been more so than these." contemporary review.
