INSCRIBED BY POTTER WITH ORIGINAL BUNNY SKETCH
The Tale of Two Bad Mice
F. Warne & Co., 1904.
First edition. 12mo. Grey paper covered boards with colour onlay to upper cover. Inscribed by Beatrix Potter (Peter Rabbit) on the half title, "For 'Bitty Roses' with love from [drawing of a rabbit.]" Pictorial endpapers and 27 colour plates by Beatrix Potter. A poor copy of the book, sometime rebacked with tape and with tape strengthening, but rare with Potter's inscription and ink sketch.
Potter inscribed two books to "Bitty Roses" this copy was in the collection of Judy Taylor for a number of decades, the other sold at Christies New York in the sale of Doris Frohnsdorff's collection, 1997. It is most uncommon to encounter books sent on behalf of Potter's rabbits and although this book is defective the provenance and inscription with the drawing make it rather special.
PROVENANCE: From the collection of Potter scholar Judy Taylor.
