ELMER WAS DIFFERENT
Elmer
Dobson, 1968.
First edition. Square octavo. Glazed pictorial boards. Illustrated throughout in colour by the author. A very good copy indeed, minor bumps to spine ends and slightly cocked, but a surprisingly well preserved copy of this iconic children's tale.
The first edition is rare, being published by a small publisher which ceased operations after the sudden death of its founder, Dennis Dobson. In 1989 Andersen Press reprinted a shortened version of the original Elmer story and subsequently a whole series of stories about the patchwork Elephant. The books have been published in many languages and have spawned a wide range of popular merchandise.
"Just be yourself, enjoy life and accept the differences in others" is the message that author David McKee hoped to promote with this story about Elmer the multi-coloured elephant.
