INSCRIBED FROM ONE GLASGOW GIRL TO ANOTHER
Christmas Card
Privately Printed, 1908.
An exquisite Christmas card, designed by Jessie M. King for her personal use. The upper cover bears an intricate illustration, depicting a galleon in full sail, printed in black, blue and gold and highlighted with silver flecks and gold paint amongst the surrounding tendrils and flowers. The calligraphic legend reads, "May fortune's faerie barque by wind and wave be wafted thee". Inside the card is inscribed in Jessie's hand, "with every good wish from 'Jakey'" and blind stamped with the Taylor's Manchester address. 22 x 12.5cm. The card is in very good condition, the drawing is bright and clean, joint between front and rear joint strengthened.
Jake was the playful nickname that E.A.Taylor gave to Jessie shortly after they met in 1898 and which their group of friends fondly called her. Jessie and Taylor married in 1908 and moved to Manchester. Each year Jessie would design and print a number of cards to be used by her and her husband, E.A. Taylor. Agnes Harvey was part of Jessie's circle of artist friends during her years at the Glasgow School of Art. Harvey studied silver-smithing in London before returning to teach at GSA and eventually joining the artist's colony in Kircubright. The two women remained friends throughout their adult life, with Jessie sending Agnes inscribed copies of most of her major books. Agnes was known particularly for her decorative metalware, enamels and beaten copper work.
PROVENANCE: Agnes Bankier Harvey, fellow Glasgow School Artist and Kirkcudbright resident, sold with her effects at Sotheby's in May 1982.
