In Darkest Africa Or The Quest Rescue And Retreat Of Emin Governor Of Equatoria.
Sampson, Low & Co. 1890.
First edition. Two volumes. 8vo. Original brown pictorial cloth, decorated in gilt and printed in black and grey. Frontispiece and a colour folding map to each volume, with an additional folding map and coloured profile sketch to the second volume. Thirty-six black and white plates in total, with further illustrations in the text and map endpapers. A bright, near fine set, the cloth exceptionally clean with a little tenderness to the hinges of volume one. A 2.5 inch closed tear to one map, with very short closed tears to the other two. In all, a very attractive set rarely encountered in such bright condition. Bookseller's stamp of Harrison and Sons to the first volume and prospectuses, with ownership inscriptions to the same. Due to the weight of the textblocks, copies in as nice condition as this are uncommon.
Stanley's famous account of the Emin Pasha relief expedition to equatorial Sudan, and the work which secured his fame as an explorer and writer following the earlier Livingstone expedition:
"Honours and awards were showered on him by chambers of commerce and geographical societies throughout Europe, and he was awarded honorary degrees by the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, and Edinburgh. A reception for him, organized by the Royal Geographical Society at the Albert Hall on 5 May 1890, was attended by 10,000 people, including the Prince of Wales. Lecture tours followed, with Stanley speaking throughout Britain and America, where he travelled in a luxurious Pullman car named Henry M. Stanley." (ODNB)
