First edition with Gooden's illustrations. Number 451 of 525 copies printed on hand made paper and signed by Gooden. Small 4to. Full creamy white vellum lettered in gilt on the spine, with gilt borders, decorations and gilt vignettes to the covers. Top edge gilt. In original publisher's slipcase with matching number on the spine label. Pictorial title page, eleven black and white engravings and many decorative initials interwoven with figures from the fables. A fine copy, some offsetting from the illustrations, but overall clean and bright, in a very good slipcase indeed.
Generally considered to be Gooden's magnum opus with L'Estrange's highly regarded translation. Contents include The Life of Aesop and a great many fables and morals, including The Hare and the Tortoise and The Fox and the Grapes.
