The Romance of Perfume
Richard Hudnut, 1928.
First edition. 8vo. Pictorial paper covered boards in publisher's slipcase. Pamphlet present in the rear pocket. Eight full page colour plates by Barbier, produced in the Smithsonian process, (a simulation of pochoir). A very good copy indeed, with a small dent in the upper joint near the slipcase thumb hole. The card slipcase is in poor condition.
A history of perfume, with Barbier's full-page illustrated scenes showing the use of perfume in China, ancient Greece, ancient Rome, Egypt, India, Persia, Elizabethan England, and eighteenth-century France. His images were reproduced for the book using a photoengraving technique known as the Smithsonian Process, executed by the printing house of William Edwin Rudge. The resulting plates are rich and vibrant.
Rear pocket contains a supplemental booklet, "At 20 Rue de la Paix," bound with white satin ribbon and featuring prints of the interior showroom of the perfumier, Richard Hudnut, Paris.
