The first (colour) Brock edition. Six volumes. 8vo. Each finely bound by Bumpus in half green morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and raised bands to spine. All edges gilt One hundred and forty four colour plates by Charles Brock, including a colour title page to each volume. A very good set indeed, with a trace of wear to the spine ends and corners. A handsome and most charmingly illustrated set.
Charles Brock had first illustrated Pride & Prejudice for Macmillan in 1895, purely in line rather in the style of Hugh Thomson and in 1898, in conjunction with his brother, he provided a series of ink and wash illustrations for Dent's set of Austen novels. However the development of the four colour printing process at the beginning of the twentieth century and the success of such illustrators as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, prompted Dent to ask Brock to prepare 24 full watercolours to accompany each of Austen's six novels. For many this remains Brock's defining work, and is the most lavishly illustrated version of Austen's works.
