A Carol: Good King Wenceslas
The Studio, 1919.
First edition. A portfolio style production issued in pictorial wrappers illustrated in colour by Jessie M. King. This is a stunning representation of the popular Christmas Carol, containing a decorative half title, 11 full page colour plates and plates of music and lyrics. A very good copy indeed. Still in its original glassine wrapper and with the printed slip inserted advertising the drawings for sale at 10 guineas each.
Describing the illustrations for this work Colin White writes, "Jessie's hitherto Art Nouveau style was undergoing a metamorphosis into the strident new Art Deco." This copy as issued by The Studio, a loose portfolio, punched with holes to lace a ribbon if required. Inevitably the fragile nature of this booklet means it is uncommon to encounter complete copies of the first printing.
