Hodder and Stoughton, 1913.
First edition, first issue. 4to. Grey cloth spine with lettering and decoration in gilt. Paper covered boards illustrated in line by Nielsen. Top edge gilt. Publisher's original card box, with a colour plate on the upper cover. Loosely inserted is the Leicester Galleries exhibition notice, advertising the original paintings for sale at their London gallery in November 1913. Pictorial endpapers with delicate line drawings. Twenty four beautiful colour illustrations mounted within decorative borders and protected by captioned tissue guards (one tissue guard bound askew). A fine copy, exceptionally bright and clean. Internally, the occasional spot of very light foxing but all plates vibrant and perfect. The box has been repaired to the joints with part of the lower side of the lid renewed, but is sound and has done the job of preserving the book.
In Powder and Crinoline was Nielsen's first gift book, published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1913. The fairy tales of Charles Perrault are retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch.
Princesses, midnight trysts and extravagant parties are all perfect scenes for Nielsen's pen to bring to life.
