Rev. Edmond Warre
Leslie Ward, 1885.
Original chromolithograph by Spy. Image size c.35cm x 21cm. In very good condition, mounted.
Later a Fellow of All Souls and Head Master at Eton College from 1884 until 1905, at Eton himself Warre was an exact contemporary of Algernon Charles Swinburne and an enthusiastic 'wetbob', winning the School Pulling for coxed pairs. Up at Oxford he continued his success as an oarsman, becoming OUBC President in 1858. On becoming headmaster at Eton, a correspondent in The Times remarked "he has made no mark as a scholar, a preacher or a man of letters" but conceded "he is well known as the best rowing coach in England".
